“Black is Beautiful – Obama 2008”

It takes a lot to get me really fired up these days but blatant double standards can still do that to me.

Friday night I am at the mall with my wife when I see an early 20ish black female walking in my direction wearing a shirt with very large print that says “Black is Beautiful – Obama 2008.”

Does anyone want to tell me how that young woman’s message didn’t turn that presidential contest into a matter of race?

Can anyone tell me how I am supposed to believe that her voting decision, (if she voted), wasn’t based upon a matter of race?

And most importantly…

Can anyone tell me what the reaction would have been if I had walked around the mall wearing a shirt that read “White is Beautiful – McCain 2008?”

Fanning the flames of racial tension is wrong no matter the pigmentation of the provocateur.

  1. I don’t think she is fanning racial tensions. I think she is expressing great pride in the fact that black people have finally come this far in the United States. To celebrate John’s ‘whiteness’ is dramatically different. White’s have not struggled in the United States for the vote; to drink out of the same fountain as others. The two are dramatically different. One day Obama’s colour will mean nothing, but now is does, the same as it did when your daughters were allowed to join the various arms of U.S. defence. I can also understand how a black person would vote for a black man for president. After all, the symbolism of that vote is so huge, it makes sense. I am Jewish and if a man/woman were running for the president, I definitely would consider voting for him/her b/c they are Jewish, as long as they were not wacky. Take care, you show a lot of pride in your family. Good luck with your new life

  2. I, too, have been saying this for a long, long time. I think fair-minded people of all colors and creeds know there’s a double standard and dislike that fact. Sadly, I believe, fair-minded people are in the minority (pardon the pun).

I would love to exchange links with you on your blogroll. Adding you to mine, now. Hope you’ll add me to yours when you can.

    Thanks.

  3. Middle aged white guys are not allowed to talk about such things. White guys are to be seen and not heard…..you honky racist….(sorry, couldn’t resist), Isn’t honky a funny word? You just have to let it go that it’s not fair and it never will be, or you’ll pull your hair out….Look at my bald head!
